Kamal Haasan said about Vishwaroopam 2

Kamal Haasan said he would be forced to quit India like legendary artist MF Hussain as he did not find a secular state in the country. He said he had invested all his resources into the mega budget movie, virtually leaving nothing for himself.

The film finally hit screens on February 7 with some cuts. Abraham, who starred and produced 'Madras Cafe', got embroiled in a controversy following protests from students and political parties in Tamil Nadu over alleged portrayal of banned LTTE in the movie.
The actor arranged for a special show to the protesters, much like Haasan did for Muslim representatives, but that failed to solve the matter.

The 'Jism' star, whose 'Madras Cafe' was also dubbed in Tamil before the Censor Board cleared it, however, did not relent to pressure even as a body of exhibitors ruled not to screen the movie in the state.

Another top Tamil actor Vijay, had to face difficulty in releasing his 'Thalaivaa' (The Leader) following a threatening letter received at a theatre here amid whispers that the film carried political overtones and therefore such a title.

However, the film managed to cross all hurdles and finally hit the screens before Vijay issued a statement praising Jayalalithaa and her government's welfare measures.

The year also saw South Indian cinema joining hands under Jayalalithaa to celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema, with President Pranab Mukherjee doing the honours at the inaugural event which also saw the top stars of the film industry travel to the southern city to participate in the gala event.

The super-rich Tamil film industry suffered some major blows with the passing away of stalwarts such as singer PB Srinivas and musician KV Ramamurthy of the famous MS Viswanathan-Ramamurthy duo, among others. The mellifluous voice of Srinivas (82) that entertained generations of south Indian film buffs, fell silent with his death on Tamil New Year's Day on April 14.

The death of other top names-musician Dakhshinamurthy, lyricist Vaali and actor-director Manivannan, known for his hit political satires like 'Amaithipadai' also left Tamil cinema grieving.

2013 tamil cinema Newcomers

Img Newcomers of Tamil Cinema 2013 Newcomers of Tamil Cinema 2013 » » Newcomers of Tamil Cinema 2013 Newcomers of Tamil Cinema 2013 December 25th, 2013 | As always, 2013 too witnessed the debut of many actors, actresses, directors and producers in Kollywood. The number of films hitting the screens has been increasing with each passing year. This year too, more than 150 films have released which means that on an average, 2-3 films release every Friday. Let's rewind to find who managed to make an impression in the year which would be ending in six days' time. Only 15-20 films out of the 150-odd films fall in the list of successful films. Likewise, among the many debutants, only a few could make an impact with the audiences and critics. Gautham Karthik, son of veteran Karthik, debuted as hero in frontline director Mani Ratnam's Kadal but the film bombed at the box-office. Huge names such as A.R. Rahman and Mani Ratnam couldn't save the film from becoming a box-office disaster. Despite a far-from-promising debut, Gautham has a few films on his hands including Vai Raja Vai, Ennamo Edho, Sippai and Naanum Rowdythaan. It appears that the talented Gautham might just be able to prove his mettle in 2014. Nivin Pauly was the other newcomer whose Neram (dubbed from Malayalam) did well. Pauly, a popular actor in Mollywood, is in talks with few Tamil film offersowing to the success of Neram. More than 50 new faces were introduced but they couldn't succeed much . Nazriya Nazim, Nivedha Thomas, Thulasi Nair(heroine of Kadal), Mrithika and Surabhi (of Ivan Veramathiri fame) appear to be the bright faces on the horizon who might go on to make it big....

Venkat Prabhu's Biriyani and Jeeva's Endrendrum Punnagai had hit the screens on December 20 and the flicks have made good collections. Karthi's Biriyani starring Karthi and Hansika Motwani got mixed reviews from critics as well as audience. But the collection wise, the Tamil flick has made a good business due to the good pre-talk for the film. In the first weekend, it has raked in Rs 6 crore + in Tamil Nadu. The film had hit the screens in above 275 screens in the state. But for the Telugu version, critics and audience have given thumbs down straight away. When it comes to Endrendrum Punnagai, the Tamil film has got positive reviews in large from critics and audience. Being the under dog in the race, the Kollywood film managed to win the hearts' of the audience with its good content and brilliant performance from the lead stars. Endrendrum Punnagai, which stars Jeeva and Trisha Krishnan, has earned more than Rs 3.25 crores at the Tamil Box Office from 200+ screens. The biggest disadvantage for the film is that it has been given 'U/A' certificate which means the film is not eligible for the 30% tax exemption from the state government.

Rajini's 3-D animation venture Kochadaiiyaan was earlier planned to be released a few days ahead of Pongal on 10th January but its theatrical release was postponed to April-May at Rajini's behest as he told the producer that in order to let Vijay's Jilla and Ajith's Veeram enjoy a good run at the box-office, the release of Kochadaiiyaan would have to be postponed by a few more months. Rajini had earlier taken a two-year sabbatical after the release of Baba which released in the early part of last decade. When queried about the gap, Rajini reportedly told that if the time wasn't ripe, nothing would succeed. He fell ill on the day his Rana was launched on 29th April, 2011 and was to be admitted to a Singapore Hospital from where he returned in July the same year. Even as no specific date about release of Kochadaiiyaan has been announced, Rajini is said to have kick-started the preparatory work regarding his next film which is most likely to be directed by Shankar. Though the names of K.S. Ravikumar and K.V. Anand did the rounds as the directors of Rajini's next film, it appears that Shankar would soon start work on his third film with Rajini!
